Beam me up, Kentucky? George Takei tweets he's 'tempted' to take on Mitch McConnell  3 Weeks ago

Source:   USA Today

Could George Takei boldly go where no man has gone before?

No, not into the far reaches of space, but someplace even harder to reach: Defeating longtime Sen. Mitch McConnell for his seat in Washington.

Oh my!

The actor famous among Star Trek fans for his role as USS Enterprise pilot Hikaru Sulu and, more recently, well-known as a left-leaning political advocate, tweeted Thursday that he's "tempted" to move to Kentucky just to run against the Kentucky senator and Senate majority leader.

Resistance, however, may be futile. McConnell hasn't lost an election since defeating Walter "Dee" Huddleston for the Senate spot in 1984.

To beat a career politician with McConnell's backing — including the support of President Donald Trump — Takei is going to have to give it all he's got, Captain.

Takei obviously isn't a resident of Kentucky, but all that's required to run for U.S. Senate is for the candidate to live in the state, so it wouldn't take much for it to happen. McConnell is up for reelection next year.

It's not known what kind of resources Takei would have if he ran for the office, but among the possibilities? Using the force.

Because Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, retweeted him in support.

That's some serious nerd power. Could Trekkies and Star Wars fans unite under a possible run against, in the eyes of McConnell's opponents, the Darth Vader or Khan of Kentucky? The ones that could be pleading, "Help us, George Takei. You're our only hope."

Who knows? But it's an interesting thought.

So, set phasers to — election?
