Pistons have interest in trading for 76ers' Markelle Fultz  1 Month ago

The Markelle Fultz saga is one of the most complex and bizarre stories in all of sports, but that isn't stopping the Detroit Pistons from inquiring.

According to a league source, the Pistons have interest in Fultz, the No. 1 overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2017 NBA draft.

Fultz is out 3-6 weeks with thoracic outlet syndrome — a compression or irritation in the area between the lower neck and upper chest — and has not played since Nov. 19. He is doing physical therapy in the hopes of returning to play.

Fultz, 20, has struggled with his shooting motion since coming into the NBA, and missed 68 games last season with a scapular muscle imbalance in his right shoulder.

Fultz would be attractive for the Pistons as a young point guard prospect with Reggie Jackson coming off the books after next season.

But what would be the cost of acquiring Fultz? He’s still a former No. 1 pick and will likely not come cheap.

The 76ers aren’t looking to add salary — the Pistons would have to shed salary to take on Fultz’s $8.3 million to avoid luxury tax concerns.

Could a future first-round pick and a Pistons salary get it done? Doubtful.

And then there’s the mystery surrounding Fultz’s shooting woes.

After shooting 41.3 percent from 3-point range (52-for-126) in 25 games as a freshman at Washington, Fultz has lost the ability to take and make long range shots, going 4-for-15 on 3-pointers in 33 career NBA games, and shooting 53.4 percent from the foul line.

This season, Fultz is averaging 8.2 points in 19 games (15 starts), 3.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists over 22.5 minutes, shooting 41.9 percent from the field.

He was relegated to the bench in mid-November when the Sixers traded for Jimmy Butler.

Liberty Ballers was first to report the Pistons' interest in Fultz.
