Police arrest Cal State Fullerton stabbing suspect, a coworker of the victim; motive remains unclear  3 Weeks ago

A suspect in the fatal stabbing at a California university has been arrested, police said Thursday.

Chuyen Vo, 51, worked at California State University, Fullerton with Steven Shek Keung Chan before killing him in a campus parking lot on Monday, said Fullerton Police Chief Robert Dunn.

The motive is still under investigation, Dunn said at a news conference, and authorities believe Vo acted alone.

Police arrested Vo at his Huntington Beach home on Wednesday and are holding him in custody for murder, Dunn said. Authorities said there is no ongoing threat, but the university has increased security during the first week of its academic year.

“We have to remain vigilant ... in supporting each other and our police to safeguard our campus and community," Fullerton President Framroze Virjee said. "We’ve long been dedicated to upholding and improving safety measures on our campus. And this isolated incident remains just that: an isolated incident.”

No information on Vo's relationship with Chan was immediately released other than the two being coworkers. Chan, 57, had been working as a consultant for the university since early 2019 after retiring from an administrative position in 2017, Virjee said in a statement.

Police said Vo also left a backpack at the scene containing an unused incendiary device, a knife that had not been used in the stabbing and potential kidnapping items, including zip ties and wigs.

Vo is being held without bail, Dunn said.

With nearly 40,000 students, the commuter school has the largest enrollment in the 23-campus California State University system. Move-in day to campus housing took place Wednesday, two days after the stabbing.

Previous killings at the university include a 1984 shooting of physics professor Edward Cooperman by a man who said the shooting was accidental. Seven people were killed and two others were wounded in 1976 when a custodian fired a rifle in a campus library.
